logo

Installing gutters on your roof is a great way to add a sleek-looking appeal to your house. Moreover installing a gutter onto your roof keeps water from flowing down your roof. If you want to learn how to install new gutters, here are some tips you can follow.

Evaluate your project

If you don’t know how to install new gutters on your roof, calling the professionals will help you avoid the pitfalls. But if you are very determined to do it on your own, it is important that you evaluate your project. You also need to inspect your roof and consider some factors. How big is your roof? Do you think you can do it alone? How big do you think your gutter should be?

Check the fascia

Also check the fascia. A lot of houses have a trim board nailed to the fascia. Before you can place a gutter, you need to remove this or add a continuous strip of wood under it to create a flat plane. The flat plane will serve as a base for your gutter so it is easier to attach it. In any case, it is important that you paint the base with a primer.

Cut the gutter

When you are ready, it is time to cut the gutter. When cutting, you need to cut from the front to the back side using tin snips. Then bend the gutter and cut the bottom. As a tip, it is best that you pre-assemble the gutter before you attach them to your roof. You can join the section on the ground so all you have to do is attach them when you are on the roof. This way, you don’t have to work from the top of a ladder which is more difficult.

Add downspout and outlet

Create a hole on the gutter which will serve as the way for the rain. Do not place the downspout on the center. The best thing to do is measure a half-meter from the corner of your house to the location of the downspout. You can place it on the corner where it is almost invisible where the rain can go directly to the drainage system.

Finish the gutter with flashing and hanger

Finally you can mount the gutter on the roof. Simply slide the gutter flashing under the shingles and secure it with an umbrella nail. If you don’t have an umbrella nail, you can ask the hardware store for your options. Do not use ordinary nails for the roof.

DIY – Bathroom Remodeling Tips

logo

If you get an excellent idea about remodeling your kitchen and bathroom, you may decorate those nicely. Well, go to a bookstore and access the remodeling section, and you will find many handyman books that offer both kitchen and bathroom remodeling tips. You can easily find an effective one that can help you most to provide suggestions.

Kitchen and bathroom remodeling are the best ways to prepare a home for sale. It was once thought that only kitchen remodeling was necessary to increase house value. Although both kitchen and bathroom remodeling is so much required, we are going to focus here on three bathroom remodeling tips.

Tip #1 – Color

Color is an essential thing with humans. We all have preferences, and we all are subtly or overtly affected by the colors around us. Fast food restaurants are notorious for their use of color. For success, they often choose colors that have been shown to arouse the appetite for food: yellow, oranges, and reds abound.

When it comes to bathroom remodeling, the emotional appeal of colors is essential. Before you even begin remodeling, establish a color scheme. Then choose fixtures, paint, tile, and other materials to carry out the plan. You also can consider what you want the room to be when your bathroom remodeling project is complete. Is it to be a child’s delight or an adult’s purely practical room? Or is it to be a serene retreat from stress? Here are some color tips to consider in bathroom remodeling.

Red and yellow color schemes awaken lively emotions. They also awaken YOU in the morning! Bright red and yellow are the best in small doses. Four red walls can be overbearing, like the too-lively partygoer. When red and yellow are of subtler, darker hues, they can turn your bathroom remodeling project cozy and warm.

Blue and green color schemes tend toward restfulness. The blues of water, whether stream, lake, or ocean, can easily be adapted to your bathroom remodeling project. The greens found in the outdoors can complement blues. Add brown or beige to give your bathroom a subdued, natural atmosphere.

Tip #2 – Lighting

When you have chosen tentatively what colors you will use in your bathroom remodeling project, subject the colors to proper lighting. You may be changing the lighting fixtures you presently have. You may be upgrading to the modern Tuscan bathroom lighting. You may be using indirect lighting near the ceiling. Test your chosen colors in lighting as nearly as possible like that you will use.

Light fixtures, too, convey emotion and atmosphere. Look at your present bathroom light fixtures before launching any bathroom remodeling project. Are they old and stained? Do they “date” your bathroom as old-fashioned or worse? Visit a lighting store and see what’s new – especially if your bathroom remodeling project is intended to increase house value.

Tip #3 – Black

Since black is not a color, we give it third place in a discussion of bathroom remodeling tips. Black is often the missing ingredient in creating a bathroom that will both satisfy you and increase home value.

Once a bathroom remodeling project is complete, there may be a feeling that something is not quite right. Maybe the colors don’t “work” after all. Or is it the lighting? Black may be the answer. Whatever color scheme you have used, a small splash of black can increase it. Add a black-framed picture to the wall. Or use a black tumbler, lotion dispenser, and toothbrush holder. Your other colors will come alive in contrast to the black.

Planning a Remodeling Project

logo

Most people want to remodel or at least buy new furniture and paint for their living areas about every 3-5 years.   Usually, no matter how much you liked the old style when you put it in, you will always have the desire at some point to make it better.

Make sure you give yourself plenty of time to plan the remodeling project. While remodeling can be exciting, there are things you need to think about before you start.  Failure to pay attention to details can cause problems and make you come up short on supplies or time.  Don’t be your own worst enemy, or worse yet, blame your contractors, when these problems could be avoided with proper planning.

What Budget Do I Have?

It is one thing to know what you want and another different thing to afford it. You should keep in mind that you will still have to eat and pay your bills during the home improvement project. It is true that you may not be able to do everything at once. However, the one you choose to do, you should do it well. Have a clear budget that you’re willing and able to spend on your remodeling project before you call a contractor.

Designing To Meet Your Dreams and Your Budget

For you to be happy with what you get, you should have expectations for it before you achieve it. Have a clear picture of what you want out of the renovation. Your renovation project should also be in view of your future. For instance, you may need a new bedroom for a new baby. If you aim at selling your home soon, make the home attractive to potential buyers. Let your goals and inspirations guide you during this process of deciding the project to embark on.

Get the Timing Right

Delays can be both disappointing and costly. You should, therefore, be keen to know the duration it may take before starting the renovation project. If you’re to do a bathroom remodel, knowing the timing prior will help you decide whether to move out while the project is underway or not. Depending on your improvement project, have an approximate timing from the contractor for you to plan yourself prior and avoid inconveniences.

Who to Hire

Finding the right contractor to hire is one of the challenging tasks you have to face. Choosing a contractor requires research which will definitely need your time. You need to have a list of potential contractors from which you have to vet. Look for contractors who have more experience working on remodeling projects of your type. Don’t forget to ask for adequate insurance, proper licensing and references from the potential contractors.

Good Luck and Have Fun

With the home improvement project that you want to embark on, you may or may not need permission. Besides warning your neighbors about the noise, there is likely a city official that should know you will be altering your house. If you want to dig a pool, there are safety rules that you need to comply with. Check the rules and regulations of your city to ensure you comply.

Repair and Paint Stucco

logo

Stucco is a durable material that can be left as is; if moisture in the air can pass freely through its porous surface, it will not become trapped inside the building. Stucco can be cleaned as needed with an approved cleaning solution and low water pressure. If cracks occur in the surface, they should be repaired.  There are some great tips for stucco repair from my old military buddy’s painting business in Chandler, Arizona.  His website is: http://BGBpainting.com

Stucco comes in shades of white, neutrals and earth tones. If you want to change the color of your stucco home, it can coated with a cement and water mixture that has been tinted with color pigment of your choosing.

Paint can be tricky to stick to previously painted stucco. Sometimes you may have to give the surface something to grip or hold on to.  If so, you can scratch the stucco with a wire brush. If the previous paint is in really bad shape, you have two options:  (1) Pressure wash the house, which you can DIY.  If that doesn’t work, you can sandblast the surface. It is recommended that you use a professional if you need to sandblast.

There are several considerations when choosing masonry paint.

  • Ability to breath allowing internal moisture to escape and still be resistant to external sources of water.
  • Flexible – Move with the house without splitting at any temperature.
  • Bridge small cracks. Removing these unattractive non-structural cracks.
  • Resist dirt pick-up and mildew growth.
  • Be resistant to chipping, chalking and peeling for maximum longevity.

No matter which type of paint is used at least the first coat should be back-rolled to properly fill the pinholes and tight cracks. This method will require two people, one spraying and one rolling. The same considerations when brushing and rolling need to be followed.

Apply the paint as a thick continuous film, immediately roll behind the sprayer. On a hot day you will have to move quickly. To make this a more enjoyable experience, work in the shade as much as possible and follow behind the sun.

Begin spraying at the top and work your way down, working the wall in sections. In order to cover the surface efficiently spray using a horizontal, side to side, movement and back roll using a vertical, up and down, movement.

The objective when painting stucco is to provide a continuous film of paint and a pinhole free surface. Do not skimp on the quality of primer or paint and the amount used. Use the best method specific to you and your own situation.

Safety First – Be sure you are anchored

When working in an area where a scaffold or aerial lift is not practical, workers can use a PFAS with a secure anchor. OSHA requires that anchors are able to hold at least 5,000 pounds of weight per person, or maintain a safety factor of at least two (twice the impact load) under the supervision of a qualified person. Anchors must not be attached to sheathing alone, because it may not be strong enough to hold the sudden weight of a falling worker. Anchors should be fixed to a strong structural feature (like a sheathed truss). Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions or consult a qualified person when installing anchors.

Second – Replacing Tiles

If you have damaged tiles, they can be replaced. A stylish new tile roof is a smart choice when you want to enhance your curb appeal and protect your home. Clay and concrete tiles come in a multitude of colors, styles, and textures, for a truly custom look. Another great thing about tile roofs is that they are completely green because the tiles come from a natural source and are completely recyclable. Tile roofs also cost less long term, than shingle roofs because they don’t require as much maintenance, typically need fewer repairs, and they don’t need to be replaced as often!

Clay tiles look nice across a large variety of homes and lend a touch of flair reminiscent of Spanish-style architecture. For an aesthetically striking choice with even better longevity, consider slate or concrete tiles.

How to Paint a Metal Roof

logo

Prepare

First, the chalk and oxidation need to be scrubbed off.  Abrasive pads that will remove the chalk but will not scratch the paint are included with the kits below.  Once the chalk is removed and the metal roof looks good when it is clean and wet, then 2 coats of primer  are applied to restore the cover any rust spots and provide a good base for the metal paint.  A rust-buster paint can be sprayed on with a paint sprayer or it can be rolled on with a microfiber roller.

Apply Primer

Once you have the primer, apply it according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Allow it to dry completely before applying any paint.

Apply Paint

Apply a premium paint and primer to a galvanized roof with a paintbrush or a roller specifically designed for corrugated metal. If crawling around on a metal roof in the hot sun does not sound like an ideal way to spend an afternoon, rent an airless sprayer to complete the project. Not only does a sprayer do a more thorough job than painting with a brush, it allows you to minimize the amount of time spent on the roof. If you spray, choose a windless day to paint.

Painting a galvanized metal roof can be time consuming, labor intensive, and potentially dangerous if you don’t know what you’re doing.  It’s highly recommended that you at least consult with a professional roofing contractor who is experienced with galvanized metal roofing.
